Oct 30 - Nov 3, 2017

Together, we can. Together, we will!

It was another great week here at RM Bacon Elementary School!

Our annual Fall Halloween Frolic was another huge success.  It was teamwork all around as staff members, students (from Bacon and Millville High School), parents, members of the community, and local businesses stepped up to help make this a great Frolic.

Special thanks to...

  • Our students for helping set up and clean up when it was all said and done
  • Students from MHS and Millville Police Department officers and explorers for working the stations
  • The Millville Fire Department for use of their light tower
  • Members of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office for providing security for the event
  • The parents who came early and stayed late to help set up and run various activities
  • The Bacon staff for planning, setting up, reaching out to parents and community members, and doing the million things needed to get this done.  We'd also like to thank our awesome custodial crew for helping sort out the aftermath.
A big shout-out to Tep's Power Equipment ( for lending us a generator for the event free of charge.  Check them out at 1007 N. High St. in Millville.  Bacon school thanks you, and we appreciate your generosity.

Truly, the Frolic was an all-hands-on-deck event, and Bacon school is fortunate to have such able and willing helping hands at times like these.  Thank you all!

Speaking of the Millville Fire Department -- members of the MFD were here on Thursday and Friday to teach our students about fire safety.  Thank you for your dedication to our students and community.

October 23 - 27, 2017

Together, we can.  Together, we will!

It's hard to believe we are already in the home stretch of October.  No doubt the May-like temps are keeping a damper on the autumnness we should be feeling, and that's helping to make October race by.  Thankfully, this harvest heat-wave will break just in time for our annual frolic.  So, here's to Fall - finally.  The calendar says it's been here for a while, but the weather looks like it will eventually get in line.

And...Like the words above say, no matter what happens here at Bacon, we are in this together.  From the best weeks to the occasional tough weeks, we face them together as family.  Family pulls together and gets done what needs to get done, and we all know what gets done - providing a safe, quality learning experience for all our students every single day.  Every Monday begins another week of opportunities for our learners.  Our little bears are our "why."  They inspire and motivate what we do day-in and day-out.

Staff, keep it up.  Together, we can be the best!  And together, we will!

Weekly Recap
Last Thursday, over 70 people came out for Bacon's Family Game Night.  A big thanks goes out to Connecting Families to Communities for sponsoring the event and setting up the gym as a big play area.  It was great seeing the students and their families get in some "board" time.  All who attended had a wonderful evening!

Also on Thursday, Linda Santiago from CSI 3 (formerly RAC team 7) was on hand during our staff meeting while K-5 teachers set student goals and input F&P data.  She'll also be at our staff meeting on 11/1 (please note - this is a Wednesday and a departure from our usual Thursday staff meetings) in order to keep the conversation going on Guided Reading and Running Records.  We'd like to thank Linda for her dedication to Bacon school and for her help in making Bacon an excellent place of learning.

Wednesday is Bacon's annual Halloween Frolic form 6-8 pm.  There will be treats, activities, and other fun things to see and do.  We hope you can join us.

Club 21 is cancelled on 10/25 and 10/31 due to the Fall Frolic and Trick or Treat.

The PBIS store will be open next week.  Teachers, check the schedule Ms. Berry sent out earlier this year, or call her to confirm your day and time.

Members of the Millville Fire Department will be here on Thursday and Friday to review fire safety with the students.  Every year, they come to Bacon (and other schools) to give our students safety tips in a fun and engaging way.  Thank you, MFD.

Friday is wear your favorite superhero shirt day!  We are changing Bacon gear day to Thursday.

October 16 - 20, 2017

Together, we can.  Together, we will!

Another great week is behind us, and another is before us.  We've got a few exciting events on the horizon - please see below.

Lots of good things are happening in the classrooms.  So far, I've been able to do almost 50 walkthrus since school began.  Many of our bears are engaged in exciting, worthwhile lessons and activities.  These are the ages and grades when most students still look forward to coming to school - to see their friends, to be around the familiar, and to see you!  Keep up the good work - keep those bears coming back for more!  Keep giving them a reason to look forward to coming to RM Bacon!

This week is Wellness Week!  Please see the flyer above for more info. Here are the color themes for the week:

October 9 - 13, 2017

Together, we can.  Together, we will!

I hope everyone enjoyed their day off.  Hopefully, you all got to do something fun and/or relaxing.  Any opportunity we get to recharge the battery and carve out extra time with our loved ones is always time well spent.  As Stephen Covey (author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) would say, it's one of the ways to "sharpen the saw."  We can keep ourselves sharp through study and attaining new knowledge, researching effective techniques to use in the classrooms, brushing up on other job-related skills, etc.  But we also keep ourselves sharp by getting in tune with our specific needs.  Sometimes, we just need to take a walk, spend a day with our families or friends, read a novel, get some popcorn and watch a movie, or do something else that isn't necessarily productive but is highly needed - and, in a way, that makes it very productive indeed.

The school year is young, but don't fail to take time to sharpen your saw.  We'll be no good to anybody (especially our students) if we are all dull by New Year's.

Weekly Recap
We have another busy week ahead, so please check out the announcements and week ahead sections.

Last week, I was able to see some lessons that were highly creative and engaging - so much so that I didn't want to leave the rooms in order to see what would happen next.  Keep up the great work!  If all the students are paying attention and enjoying what is going on, we are well on our way to equipping them to be learners and contributing members of our society.  Nice job on keeping school a place a learning and a place of fun!

Parents - don't forget that tomorrow (10/10) is picture day!

On Thursday, October 19, Connecting Families to Communities and RM Bacon together will be hosting a family game night at the school.  This event is open to all families, so please feel free to join us.  Flyers will be sent home sometime this week.
