March 26 - 30, 2018

Bears,

Happy post-snow weekend!  The snow is behind us (hopefully), but the cold is sticking around during the build up to Spring Break and Easter.  I hope everyone made the best of a snow-filled midweek.

Remember, this is a somewhat shorter week.  There is no school on Friday, and Bacon has a 1:45 dismissal on Thursday.  Also, there is no Club 21 and no Latch Key this Thursday.  Please make arrangements to have your children picked up on time.

The snow days got us a little out of rhythm this week - in terms of pictures, not learning.  We'll see if we can get more pics up for next week's blog.  In the meantime, we did have a lot birthdays this past week, so enjoy the selfies!

Everyone keep striving, keep driving, and keep thriving.

The Week Ahead
Monday (3/26):  D day - Lesson plans due

Tuesday (3/27): E day - A great day of fun and learning

Wednesday (3/28):  A day - Workout Wednesday

Thursday (3/29):  B day - staff meeting (8 am in the library), 1:45 dismissal

Friday (3/30):  C day - Spring Break

March 19 - 23, 2018

Bears,

It was a...magical...week at Bacon.  On Thursday, we welcomed Ken the Magician to our school.  He did an early afternoon show for our students that focused on character education, and he returned in the evening to give our students and parents a free show that focused on reading and the importance of getting an education.  The students were hooked and entertained, and Ken used slight-of-hand and story telling to convey powerful truths about the importance of being a kind and respectful person as well as being a hard worker who doesn't quit.  I'd like to thank Barb Lore, Amanda DeVita, Patti Banker, Dina Klaudi, Laurie Polof, Nancy Quay, and Maggie Colina for their hard work and assistance in making this show possible.

This past week, we began our Breakfast in the Classroom program.  The early feedback has been largely positive.  Our staff has been flexible and accommodating, and Candy Devich and her cafeteria crew have been arriving early to get the job done.  Thanks also goes to Joe Rowland, our district's food services manager, for his help.  So far, it's been going well, and the few questions that have come up have been addressed.  Parents, as always, if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact the school.  I'd also like to give a shout-out to our student helpers who arrive faithfully each morning to help deliver the breakfasts each morning.  Great job, Bears!

Is nor'easter number four on the way?  The early reports are we'll get something, but who knows.  By sometime on Monday, we'll probably have a better idea.  That being said, it looks like no matter what falls from the sky (snow, rain, a combo?), Tuesday and Wednesday might be messy.  Staff, parents, and students -- watch the forecast and plan accordingly!

Everyone have a nice week.  Spring Break is just around the corner.  Well, maybe it's around two corners, but it's not too long before everyone gets a well-deserved break!!

March 12 - 16, 2018

Bears,

Another busy week has come and gone.

This past week, our district neared completion of a revamp of our grades 3-5 math curriculum.  Some of Bacon's teachers were part of the writing team, and things are looking good.  The work for grades K-2 will begin soon, and upon completion, we will have a better approach to instruction and assessment for math at the elementary level.

Also this week, many of our staff members participated in training for professional learning communities (PLCs).  These are designed to give teachers extra time during the week to focus on specific goals they'd like to accomplish as a grade level and within their instruction.  Teachers can use this time to plan and create common assessments, discuss student achievements and causes for setbacks, analyze test scores, and a number of other goal-oriented topics.  Our discussion this week at Bacon went well, and it will be exciting to see what our teachers will be able to accomplish during this time.

On Monday, we conducted a lock down drill under the supervision of the Millville Police Department.  We are required to do these drills monthly, but this time, we had the added benefit of being observed by trained law enforcement officers and other district personnel.  It was a good opportunity to receive feedback on our process.  We'd like to thank them for their assistance, and because of their feedback, we'll be adjusting a few things to ensure our students and staff are as safe as possible.

Attention parents/guardians -- by now, you should have received a letter detailing our breakfast in the classroom program.  In case you didn't, the letter is posted below.  Please call the school if you have any questions or concerns.  The breakfast program begins on Monday.

For you weather watchers - it looks like the third Nor'easter within two weeks will give us just a glancing blow, meaning there is a possibility of light snow on Monday.   Does this finally signify the end of winter?  Are we done with the snow?  The calendar says winter officially hangs around until March 20th.  We'll see...

Everyone have a great week!

**Attention staff -- there is a staff meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 19th.  I will give you more details early this week.  Stay tuned.
