February 29 - March 4, 2016

Bacon Bears,

This was a tough RM Bacon Weekly to write. It just hit me that this is my last RM Bacon Weekly as Principal of RM Bacon School. What started out 4 years ago as an idea, has turned into so much more. We were able to create the RM Bacon Weekly as a forum to connect students, parents, staff and the community. We were able to accomplish that in a short amount of time.

RM Bacon Weekly by the numbers:
The RM Bacon was (and will be) the hub for our school to tell OUR STORY. I am so happy that it will be continuing. Prior to the new Principal, Mrs. Devita has agreed to keep it going!

I am usually not at a loss for words, but I want everyone to know I am so grateful that I was a part of the RM Bacon community for the past 5 years! I have learned so much from the students, parents, teachers, staff and community. I am excited about going to Lakeside Middle School, but I will truly miss the Bacon Bears!

Coaches Corner - by Mr. Hudson
This week I had the opportunity to read to Mrs. Munzenmayer’s Kindergarten class.  It was exciting to see how eager the class was to have a story read to them.  The story I read was called “My Teacher’s Secret Life.”

The students laughed after each page as we talked about the night life of the teacher in the story.  Many students wondered if Mrs. Munzenmayer slept at the school with a blow up mattress just like the teacher in the story.  My favorite part of the experience was having the class as a follow up talk with Mrs. Munzenmayer about the things she did after school.

The students learned that she likes to take care of her dog, work in her garden, and read books.  I think the students were able to see that Mrs. Munzenmayer is just like some of their parents.

Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Hess's writers
Another exciting part to the week was witnessing Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Hess work with their class on writing.  Each student was working on a story this week that was to be published and read to the class on Friday.

During my visit on Friday, I was able to see just how hard the students had worked on their stories this week while completing the final edits.  One by one, each student came to the front of the room and shared their story with the class.

It was nice to see the other students being supportive of their classmates by clapping and complimenting one another.  Overall, the students writing was detailed and showcased that the future writers of the world are being molded at Bacon School.

Mr. Hudson working in Mr. D's class
This week was another awesome week at Bacon School both in the classroom and out.  As far as in the classroom, I was able to work with Mr. Drewnowski’s 5th grade math class.  During this time, we were able to teach math together.  Mr. Drewnowski divided his class into groups with centers that all revolved around adding and subtracting fractions with uncommon denominators.  It was exciting to see not only Mr. Drewnowski’s passion for math but also his students.  Each student had a task to complete that were differentiated based on their skill set.  By the end of the lesson, each student was able to show their understanding of the math topic based on the work they had completed.  This was an awesome experience and I look forward to seeing how the students’ progress with this particular skill.

When it came to out of the classroom, on Thursday our staff participated in our first ever Edcamp style staff meeting.  Here is a link for what an Edcamp looks like.  This was a great time for all of our teachers to talk, share, and work together for the betterment of ourselves and school.  The topics covered were Math SGOs, Writing in Reading Street, Technology Integration, and PBIS.  Overall, the teachers were highly engaged and really pushed one another’s thinking.  My favorite part was that our teachers were leading the conversations to help one another within our building.  I truly feel believe that most of the answers to our questions are found within our building.  Stay tuned for our next Edcamp meeting and the topics that will be discussed.

4th grade students are researching colleges and universities
Bacon Bears,

We had a very exciting week last week at RM Bacon! On Wednesday, We had our annual Jump Rope for Heart event. This year we did it after school and had 70 kids participate. As soon as we have our final figures on the fundraising, we will share them with everyone.

On Thursday we celebrated 100th day of school, Valentines Day parties and had our Dance. Even though we had so many activities, everyone did a great job. It was a perfect way to end the week.

This week will be shortened due to Presidents Day on Monday. Our monthly HSA meeting is on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. This is your last chance to get FREE Bingo cards for Pizza Bingo (which is going to be held on Wednesday, February 24.

Coaches Corner by Mr. Hudson
This week I was able to observe an awesome writing lesson in Mrs. Gandy’s class. The students were writing to their future college they wish to attend. It was exciting to see their enthusiasm as they were requesting information and letting each college know their future enrollment date. Some of the popular choices were; Rowan, Harvard, Temple, Ohio State, and Cumberland County College. I was able to sit with a few students and share my college experience with them. You could definitely tell the students enjoyed this project and were making connections to something that is still 8 years away. How is that for setting goals? The students and Mrs. Gandy are mailing these letters out this week and hope to receive some information back from their college choice. Stay tuned for the results to this awesome project.

On Wednesday, I was able to experience first grade. Mrs. Bingham’s class was doing a Morning Meeting and going over goals for the day. The students were engaged and you could tell that they were eager to start their day. Mrs. Pedrick’s class was doing a math lesson on comparing two digit numbers. Once the students were taught the alligator trick, it seemed that they were able to grasp the concept. Mrs. Lunemenn’s class was completing a graphing activity using different colored candy hearts. Each student received a box of mixed hearts. After organizing them into color coded piles, the students built a bar graph showing how many of each color they had. How cool is that, first graders are analyzing and building data.

My final activity this week was in third grade. On Thursday, it was our 100th day of school. The 3rd grade teachers built S.T.E.M. centers that all revolved around the number 100. My favorite was the cup stacking pyramid. For this, we had to build a pyramid that used 100 cups. The challenge was which team could build a pyramid the highest. My team came in second but as a whole, every student was engaged and pushing the limits with their stacking ability.
