March 6 - 10, 2017

Bears,

Another great week is in the books here at Bacon.  This week, we celebrated Read Across America Week, which is a national celebration of reading that takes place to coincide with Dr. Seuss's (1904 - 1991) birthday.  Each day brought something new (crazy hats, wearing Dr. Seuss colors, etc.), and students and staff alike had a blast.

The highlight of the week was the Read Around the World Family Night.  On Wednesday night, students and their families were able to come back to Bacon to hear great stories, eat some snacks, and enjoy quality time with their loved ones.  When participants arrived at school, they checked in to the front desk to receive their passports.  From there, they went on a tour around the world (and around our school) to hear a great story from various countries read by staff members, 5th grade Bacon students, and some volunteers from the Girl Scouts.  Around 40 families joined us that night, and we all had a great time.  Thanks so much to the Bacon staff and student volunteers (including the Girl Scouts) who helped make the evening possible.  A big shout out to Heather Rowland, Bacon's very own media specialist, for dreaming up the idea and pulling everything together to make it a reality.  It was awesome!

Before the weather turned cold again, some of our Bears were able to take advantage of the warmth to do some reading outside.  Also throughout the week, crazy socks and crazy hats could be seen, and Bacon was awash in red, white, and black in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday.  Staff and students also got into pajama day, the final day of Read Across America Week.  Many were students were seeing cozying up to some fun projects and activities that day.

March also kicked off some music appreciation, and Mrs. Beth Rohaly has been treating the entire school to some early-morning singing from some of our Bears.

Cassy Johnson from RAC Team 7 (a group from the state that helps us be even better) come to our staff meeting on Thursday.  She shared some info from the climate and culture survey that was done earlier this year.  As a school, we can proudly say that we like what we do and where we do it - and that's a pretty big deal.  Credit goes to the great staff of RM Bacon for making our school such a great place to come each and every day and for making our school a place of safety, learning, and fun for our Bears.  If we like being here, the kids notice and follow our lead.  Great job, all!

In floor hockey news, the last playoff game of the season was played on Friday.  It was a nail biter that went into sudden-death overtime, but our final bracket is now established and set to be played on Tuesday.  From there, the winner of that game will face the staff in the annual student/staff floor hockey game on Friday.

That's all for now.  Everyone have a great week, and do something great for someone else.
Mike

February 27 - March 3, 2017

Bears,

RM Bacon Elementary School had another great week.  We hosted our annual Pizza Bingo Night, and a number of families were able to join us for food and games.  Some great prizes were awarded, and it was nice to see so many students come out and enjoy a fun night of games and hanging out.  A big thanks goes to the Bacon Home School Association for sponsoring the event, and another big thanks to the wonderful Bacon staff who helped in whatever ways they were needed.

The Traveling Science Show visited Lakeside Middle School last week, and some of our Bacon Bears were able to check out the awesome presentation and experiments.  I'd like to thank Lakeside on behalf of the other elementary schools for hosting the event.  I know the parents and students who were able to make it had a great time.  Thanks also to the Parents As Leaders group for bringing the show to Millville.  A lot of people had a lot of fun - thank you!

The Kindergarten swim program is in full swing, and the students seem to be having a great time.  Thank you to the fantastic instructors at the Holly City Family Center for your hospitality and solid swimming instruction!  These Bears can swim!

Some Millville Senior High School students paid our Bears a visit and helped out with the sewing program that will be taking place.  Our students are getting their chorus robes custom fitted, and it was nice to have some of Millville's older students help out our Bears for a worthy cause.

All-City Band and Chorus rocked the house at Lakeside Middle School.  Congrats to all our Bears who were chosen for the honor of playing with Millville's other accomplished elementary musicians and singers.  You all did a great job!  Dedication pays off - keep playing, keep practicing, and keep working hard.

Alicia Discepola and Lauren Daigle brought their collective tech experiences to Bacon to help our staff members with technology related questions or issues.  Thanks to both for spending a day with us and imparting your tech wisdom to Bacon.

The Week Ahead
This week, we have a lot to look forward to. For starters, it's Read Across America Week!  Each day, our Bears will be able to dress up and participate in the week's activities.  Please see the flyer below for details.

Come and join us on Wednesday, March 1st, for our Read Around the World Family Night.  The fun will be from 6-8 pm, and we'll have plenty in store for parents and children to do AND taste.

Tuesday is our PBIS Respect the 29th Pep Rally.  We'll be addressing our attendance initiative among other things, and as always, we've got a few surprises in store for our students.

Also this week, Cassy from the RAC team will be joining us at Thursday's staff meeting to review the results of the Climate and Culture survey.

That's all for now.  Everyone have a great week, be great, and do great things
Mike
