December 17 - 21

Bacon Bears,

You Matter!

This is a difficult post. As a Principal, I have many responsibilities, and with the recent events that happened in Sandy Hook Elementary I am struggling with words to describe how I feel. Honestly, I have not watched the news stories about the tragedy. All of the information, and this is purposeful, has been through what I have read through trusted sources. I have taken the weekend to reflect on the preciousness of life, the importance of being a father and husband, and role teachers play in our society. I also have thought a lot about why we must continue to move on, be brave and committed to our kids!

On Monday morning our staff will begin the healing process with a brief meeting to process the events of Friday, discuss our game plan in working with the children, and to look at the safety of our school. We certainly can not accomplish everything in 20 minutes. This will be a lengthy process that will require not only the staff, but eventually the students, parents and community members of Millville.

On Wednesday evening  prior to the Talent Show, I will be coordinating a meeting with any parents who would like to discuss the events of Sandy Hook Elementary at 5:30 PM in Room 2. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss safety concerns at RM Bacon, and we can move forward as parents and educators.

There will be some immediate changes to RM Bacon Elementary that will be designed to promote safety and security. We will be sending a letter home with all students on Monday that will outline these changes. In that letter we will also highlight the series of meetings set up for January so that we will all feel safer in wake of these tragic events.

I hope you can attend our meeting on Wednesday at 5:30 pm before the Talent Show. Your attendance will be welcomed!

In the meantime, we will continue our pursuit of the impossible as we educate our world class students!

December 10 -14

Bacon Bears,

You Matter!
You Matter!

This week students in grades 3 - 5 spent time preparing for next week's Winter Concert. Our Chorus and Band students improved each day, and we are all looking forward to Tuesday, December 11, 2012 @ 7:00 PM when they show off!

Throughout the course of the week, our Bacon Bears continued to work on the important aspects of their learning. As I walked through the building, I heard high levels of questioning, students applying their learning, and lots of technology! Each day we take a step closer to being a world class 21st century school!

So, as we prepare for this upcoming week ask yourself these questions:
- Am I giving 110%?
- Am I being safe, responsible, and respectful?
- Will I improve from where I was last week?

I am sure I have highlighted our building in previous posts, and I hate to brag, but we have an awesome school. Want to see why? Here are some pictures I took of the building this week.

Our entrance is beginning to look a lot like... Holiday Break?

December 3 - 7

Bacon Bears,

You Matter!

Breaking News
The Regional Achievement Center (RAC) visited RM Bacon on Thursday, November 29. I am pleased to report that they absolutely loved our school. Here are a few of the reasons:

Innovation
- Unlike any of the other schools they visited, RM Bacon has a defined social media presence that seeks parent, student, and teacher collaboration and communication
- Our Climate and Culture- RM Bacon has embarked on a few new initiatives this year to engage parents and community members through Bacon University, Mural Projects, and Home and School events
- Video Projects - RM Bacon was selected to participate in 2 video projects to assist other teachers with improving classroom instruction (EnVisions Math and ASCD)

Classroom Instruction
- Unlike other schools they visited, RM Bacon has a more student driven classroom environment
- Learning Centers are clearly defined, and added to the student-centered classrooms
- Students were on task and were able to articulate objectives
- Basic Skills Intervention uses student data to inform instruction
- Teachers displayed  great questioning techniques, appropriate use of the SMART Boards, and high level     Blooms questioning

I am so proud of our Bacon Family! But, I will offer a word of caution- We still have a LOT of WORK to do! Students and teachers will need to continually challenge themselves to make sure that we prove to the world in May that Impossible Is Nothing! We need to improve our NJASK scores! We will do it, together!!!!

This Week
We have a few changes to our regular schedule this week. We are calling this week "Chorus Week." Mrs. Simpson, in an effort to minimize classroom disruptions, has been working with the students in the classroom on the Winter Concert musical pieces. This week she will have double practices each day (9:20 AM - 10:00 AM, and again at 3:00 - dismissal). Next Tuesday (December 11) is the Winter Concert. Make sure to mark your calenders.

After several reschedules, the Fire Company will be visiting RM Bacon on Tuesday to make sure all the students get an opportunity to tour the Fire House. On Friday, the Nurse will be taking selected students to the Motor Park for the Annual Coats for Kids.

Video of the Week:
Mr. Hudson's kids kicked out the 19th Century School desks, and recreated their learning environment to model 21st Century learning. Here is the video they made about the change:

Soccie Game 2012
We ended a short, but eventful week on a really good note today! Students and teachers met in the gym for our annual Soccie game. In between innings, there were activities for each of the grade levels. Teachers came out victorious in the Soccie game by 1 point!

It was obvious from the "Wobble" competition that the teachers had been practicing. 4th grade girls suffered their first defeat in overtime. What a wobble!

When we return from the Thanksgiving break, we are going to have a busy schedule. Check out the weekly overview for all the activities.

On behalf of the entire RM Bacon Staff, have a great Thanksgiving!

November 12 - 16

Bacon Bears,

You Matter!
Thank you to everyone who attended the Halloween Frolic! A fun time was had by all :)

On Wednesday, we were treated to our first snowfall of the school year! Some classes used this as a teachable moment, and went out in the snow! Besides playing in the snow, kids asked big questions about the snow.

Ms. Fallows's 1st grade class asked themselves...what is snow? Where does it come from? What does it taste like?
After going outside and "collecting" snowflakes, Mrs. DiGorgio's class drew pictures and studied the mirror images of the flakes

We are getting into the life long fitness mode at RM Bacon this week. We are excited to be participating in the World Run Day on Monday at 2:00 PM. All proceeds that are raised will go to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Organization. The top 10 fundraisers will receive a free T-Shirt! Here is the trailer for the World Run Day:

Also this week is Sneaker Week. If staff donate 5.00 they are allowed to wear sneakers the entire week to show the students that we are a healthy school! For more information, please visit this site:

There is only one thing on the mind of everyone in the South Jersey area.... Hurricane Sandy. Our superintendent has said that they will be determining whether or not we have school based on the reports and if we don't hear anything, we are still open.

We had a Bacon Bear Alumni visit our school on Friday. Taiwan Holmes, who is currently attended RM Bacon in the 1980's stopped by to see the school. He met with former teachers, and even talked to a few students. Thanks for the visit!

Video of the week. As I was observing Mrs. Benson's class this week, I watched this video. Very Cool:

October 22 - 26

Bacon Bears,

You Matter!

It was not easy being out of the building three days last week . Mrs. Harris continues to do an excellent job for the school in my absence.

I attended and presented at the Texas ASCD conference in Dallas, TX. It was a great experience all around, and as I shared the RM Bacon Elementary story, educators were impressed. I was able to tour Dealey Plaza, the grassy knoll, and the school book depository museum all in relation to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States of America.

Dr. Cook on the grassy knoll
On Thursday, along with Mrs. Simpson (Music Teacher and Family and Community Engagement Coordinator), and Mrs. Markee (our Home and School Association President) I visited Knapp Elementary School. Knapp has become recognized throughout the country as one of the premier schools for family and community engagement. We learned about their school, and their programs. We also had the opportunity to share some of the great programs that are occurring here at RM Bacon Elementary.

Did you know that RM Bacon Elementary has a Facebook page? Yes, in addition to twitter, and the blog, we are on Facebook. At the time of this blog we had 65 likes. Once we get to 100 likes, the students will get a special celebration (RM Bacon Facebook page link)

We are looking for candidates for our first (in a while) Talent Show.... Don't think you have talent? Check this out video, and you might just have a shot at being selected!

Last week we hosted former Harlem Globetrotter Seth Franco.

Seth entertained the students and staff, but it was his message that had everyone excited. Seth talked about how we need to connect with students and adults, talk about our problems, and work hard to overcome!

Seth enjoyed his time at RM Bacon. He signed a ball for us to display in the front office. He said this of our students, "They were great. I loved how they participated, and participated. Thanks to everyone on staff for their help in making this event a success!"

This week is busy for Dr. Cook. He will be presenting on all of the tremendous things going on at RM Bacon. First, on Saturday he will be presenting with our Club 21 coordinator Ms. Discepola on Going Global. They recruited Mrs. Sutton and some willing students to help build interest for the conference.

Then on Sunday, Dr. Cook will be traveling to Dallas, TX to present at Texas ASCD  Annual Conference with Principal Tra Hall (from Texas) on the importance of being connected through Social Media. Dr. Cook will be in Dallas until Tuesday.

@web20classroom at the Bammy Awards.
I need to order these socks this year!
The school seems to be getting into a rhythm. Teachers and students have been establishing routines, and for the most part I have seen very few kids in my office for discipline.

I am excited to welcome Ms. Ashley McCloone to the RM Bacon family. Ms. McCloone will be working as a PBIS aide. She will be assisting classroom teachers with interventions to improve discipline, as well as coordinating the Bear Bucks store, and much more!

This past week we were able have our first official assembly. The purpose of the assembly was to welcome back the students, and teach them about our PBIS program. Our guidance counselor, Ms. Spanbauer, did a bully awareness activity with the students. Is it possible for students to NOT bully this year? Well, for us, Impossible is Nothing!

Video of the week (The Missing Bacon Bear)

Tech Friday 2.0 begins this week on Friday at 8:20AM. This voluntary professional development opportunity will highlight various technology initiatives such as SMART board, remind101.com, imovie trailers, blogging, and much more! Maybe Mr. Drewnowski will show us his iphone 5??

We had a very successful Back To School Night. Parents and families were able to participate in the journey we are taking here at RM Bacon. At the beginning of the evening, we showed this new trailer:

After the trailer we discussed how much the NJASK assessment scores have improved, and how the teachers and students will be working together to achieve higher this school year. We also reviewed our discipline data from the past two years, and parents we able to see how our discipline referrals are declining.

The teachers did a fantastic job of communicating to the parents their expectations for the school year. Parents were able to see some of the projects, and technology that the students are using in class.
