Bacon Weekly - 9/26-9/30, 2022

Angel is ready for duty

Bacon Bears,

Just like that we are at the end of September. Time flies when you are having fun and our Bacon Bears are having fun. Throughout the month, we have worked very hard on establishing routines, setting the expectations and rewarding students for their AWESOME behavior.

Our staff is working tirelessly on making our school a family oriented experience for our students and parents. We hope that you feel the love as we take our learning to the next level! Each day on the announcements, Dr. Cook concludes with this message:

Most importantly, You are great this morning. We love to see you happy and we love to see you smiling. We want you to be happy today, tomorrow and in the future. And remember, Bacon Bears, if no one told you today that they loved you, know that we love you and will always love you.

We are preparing to bring back some timeless traditions this year since the pandemic has (hopefully) run its course. In October we will be having a Spooky Spirit Week and we will be hosting the Halloween Frolic on October 27 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. This will be a Spooktacular evening with a Trunk or Treat, crafts, and the Haunted Walk.

Want to get involved?

Our first PTO and School Improvement Meeting for Parents will be at 6:00 PM on Monday, September 26, 2022. We will be having these combined School Improvement and PTO meetings once a month for the reminder of the year. Here is a link that will have agendas and future meeting dates. (Click here)

Kindergarten ARC - We are scientists - Mrs. Lunemann and Mrs. Banker's Room

This week we started ARC.  It's about getting our kids to feel like scientists. We read the story Dinosaur Lady, talked about being good scientists when we read and write, watched a Mystery Doug on What are scientists, and then we BECAME scientists! We dissected owl pellets.  As you can imagine the kids were super excited and had a blast! They are telling everyone they are real scientists.  They discovered....., they found.... etc.  What a great opening to get them excited and to buy into the new curriculum. Outside they were all about finding and discovering.

Thank you to Mr. Coyle and changes at Bacon!

Mr. Coyle at the Bacon Step Up

Bacon Bears,

Then, Now Always Family

As you know, Mr. Coyle was recently transferred to Reick Ave. School as their new Principal. Mr. Coyle spent 6 years as the Bacon Principal and will be dearly missed by the staff, students and community. Fortunately, for us, he is still in the Millville School District and will be doing great things at Reick Ave. Mr. Coyle said, "I am really going to miss the Bacon Bears. I was so fortunate to work with such dedicated staff members and students. I am really going to miss all of the great times we had there. I am looking forward to staying in touch because I am right around the corner."

Retirements

We want to thank Ms. O'Neil for her service to Bacon School. Ms. O'Neil retired after 34 years in education. She was previously at RD Wood School and finished her last 5 years at Bacon. She will be missed and we wish her well in her retirement.

Kathleen Harper was with us for the past 3 years as Paraprofessional. She is looking forward to retirement and spending more time with friends and family!

Laurie Polof was at Bacon for the past 17 years in a variety of capacities. She was a first grade paraprofessional and most recently the Financial Secretary for Bacon. Mrs. Polof is looking forward to moving to South Carolina with her husband, Bob to enjoy retirement.

Paula Ford retired this year after 23.5 years of dedicated service. In addition to being a Resource Room teacher at Bacon, Ms. Ford was certified in the Wilson Reading Program, tutored and worked in the ESY program in the summer. Now that she is retired, she is looking to move back to West Virginia and go hiking and white water rafting.

Dr. Cook back in the main office
Dr. Spike Cook, Principal

Our new Principal is a familiar face, Dr. Cook. He served as Bacon's Principal from 2011-2016. During that time, he began the Bacon Weekly Blog, hosted ASCD for their video series on Classroom Instruction That Works and worked collaboratively with the Bacon community to earn a Silver Award for the Healthy Schools Initiative.

Dr, Cook went to Lakeside Middle School and was the Principal there until being transferred back to Bacon on July 1.

Dr. Cook is excited to be back and Bacon, and had this to say, "I am looking forward to returning to Bacon. This school is an amazing place because of the staff, students and parents. I know a lot has changed in the past 6 years, but I do feel like I am back home!"

Dr Cook has two children (Henry - 18 and Catherine - 15) and lives in Linwood, NJ. He is an adjunct professor at Rowan University in the graduate program for School Administration. He enjoys playing golf, tennis and basketball as well as hiking with his dog, Rico.

Kathy Karisko, Principal Secretary

Our new Principal Secretary, Kathy Karisko, is coming to Bacon from the High School. She was worked in the district for four years in various capacities.

Prior to being in Millville, Kathy was in the medical field for 18 years. Kathy lives in Millville with her family. She enjoys camping, going to the beach and just relaxing!

Planning for 22-23

Currently, we are beginning to plan for the 22-23 School Year. There have been and will be a lot of changes designed to improve areas and continue the amazing programs at Bacon. In August, we will be scheduling a few opportunities to meet the new Principal, Dr. Cook. In addition, Dr. Cook will be making home visits to families in the community to get better prepared for the school year. Stay tuned for more details!
