Bacon Weekly - June 8 - 12, 2026

2nd Graders at the Fossil Park

Bacon Bears,

We are BEARS! Be Excited About Reading in School

Last week was another busy and exciting week at R.M. Bacon Elementary!

Our 5th graders enjoyed their annual trip to Ocean City, creating memories with their classmates as they prepare for the transition to middle school. Meanwhile, our 3rd graders proudly presented their Marine Life Projects to fellow students and parents. The presentations were informative, engaging, and showcased the hard work and creativity of our students. Since the 3rd graders have been doing such an outstanding job this year, we surprised them with an ice cream treat after lunch to celebrate their success.

On Wednesday, our Safety Patrol students traveled to Wildwood for their annual trip. We are incredibly proud of these students who serve as leaders and role models throughout the school year.

Thursday was packed with exciting activities. We celebrated Red, White, and Blue Day in honor of America's 250th birthday and because we will not be in school on July 4th. Students and staff showed their patriotic spirit by wearing red, white, and blue throughout the day.

Also on Thursday, our 2nd graders visited the new Rowan University Fossil Park and Museum. Bacon was one of the first schools to experience this hands-on learning opportunity, and our students did an amazing job. Several museum staff members complimented our students on their behavior, engagement, and enthusiasm throughout the visit. We are proud of the way they represented our school community.

Our Character Education Team continues to meet regularly as we prepare for next school year. We are excited to announce that we plan to apply for National School of Character distinction. The team has been generating many exciting ideas, and we look forward to sharing more information in the months ahead.

In addition, our 3rd graders will travel to the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor on Thursday for another exciting educational field trip.

As always, thank you for your continued support of R.M. Bacon Elementary School. Together, we continue to make Bacon a special place for our students to learn, grow, and succeed.

A New End-of-the-Year Tradition: Tattoo a Teacher Fundraiser!

This year, the Bacon Student Council and PTO are introducing a brand-new fundraiser that is sure to bring plenty of smiles and excitement to our school community. From June 8th through June 15th, students will have the opportunity to participate in our first-ever "Tattoo a Teacher" Fundraiser!

Students can purchase tickets, with every $1 equaling one ticket, and place those tickets toward the participating staff member of their choice. Each ticket represents a temporary tattoo that will be placed on that teacher. The more tickets a teacher receives, the more tattoos they will wear!

This year's courageous participants include Mr. Sooy, Ms. Candy, Mrs. Veale, Mrs. Gandy, Mrs. Bingham, Miss McLaughlin, Miss Powers, Miss Ruberton, Mrs. Rodriguez, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Catlett, and even Dr. Cook!

The fundraiser is designed to be a fun way for students to support school activities while enjoying some friendly competition among staff members. On June 17th, the tattoos will be revealed, and students will get to see the results of their efforts.

We are grateful to our PTO and Student Council for bringing this creative idea to Bacon. We look forward to seeing our students participate, support their favorite staff members, and help make this first-ever event a memorable one.

Who will end up with the most tattoos? Stay tuned for the big reveal!

A Special Spotlight on Our Library Program

At R.M. Bacon Elementary, our library continues to be a vibrant hub of learning, curiosity, and student engagement, thanks to the outstanding leadership of Ms. Holliday, our Library Teacher.

        • Ms. Powers' Class – 275 books
  • Ms. Smith's Class – 233 books
  • Ms. Lore's Class – 194 books

During the 2025-2026 school year, our students borrowed an impressive 2,653 books, demonstrating a strong love of reading and a commitment to literacy. In addition, 120 new books were added to the collection, ensuring that our students have access to engaging, relevant, and high-interest reading materials. Through book fairs and fundraising efforts, the library also generated $3,432.41, which helps support future purchases and programming.

Some of this year's most popular titles included books from the Amulet series, Pete the Cat, Dog Man, A Big Guy Took My Ball!, Dark Diaries, and Goosebumps, reflecting the diverse interests of our readers.

One of the highlights of the year was the library's "Glow" initiative, which celebrated students who achieved 10 or more book checkouts. Students eagerly tracked their progress and looked forward to seeing their names displayed on the library bulletin board. Flexible seating options also created a welcoming environment where students could comfortably explore and enjoy their new books.

The library's impact could also be seen across grade levels. The top classes for book checkouts were:

As we look toward next year, Mrs. Holliday has already begun planning for continued growth, including expanding inventory efforts, updating sections of the collection, and improving navigation within the library to make it even more student-friendly.

Thank you, Mrs. Holliday, for your dedication, creativity, and passion for fostering a love of reading in our students. Your hard work has made a tremendous impact on the culture of literacy at Bacon School. We are grateful for all that you do and look forward to another exciting year in our library!

Thank you for helping our Bears grow as readers, learners, and lifelong book lovers!
